Rescue

Hi my name is Shatner, also known as "Shat-Man!"  Unlike most birds that come through rescue, I came from a caring home.  My last memory of my previous owner was seeing her cry.  She cried because she loved me and I was her baby!  She kissed me and we hugged.  It was quite evident that I was a very “special” bird.  Tammy and Dave from the rescue picked me up and as it turned out, they already had a wonderful match for me. There was a young woman who had always dreamed of having an African Grey in her life.  She had experience with large birds and, being homebound for the most part, could satisfy my need for companionship. African Grey parrots, like most pet parrots, are very high-maintenance pets, as they require a great deal of personal attention.  She was willing accept me as part of her “flock”, which was an interesting concept, since I was an only child.  For her, it was love at first site and I sensed she could understand me and that SHE was trainable!  I am pretty much a one-owner bird you know.  I take commitment seriously.

Being a typical African Grey, I love to make RACKET!  I talk, sing, imitate sounds and am simply entertaining.  I get regular showers to control my dander issues.  I am sure glad my new owner is not allergic to me!  In the past year, I have opened up and feel happy, secure and content in my new home.  I have a little “Buddy” cockatiel that adores me we make the DYNAMIC DUO.  Who would have thought?

Shanter’s story is unusual.  Most birds that come through rescue have physical and emotional scars.   He was very fortunate to go from one loving home into another; it made the transition into his new life much easier.  Even without the “baggage”, it did, however take time to earn trust, confidence and love.
